THURSDAY, Dec. 15, 2011— Jennifer Hudson for Weight Watchers, Mariah Carey for Jenny (formerly known as Jenny Craig), and Janet Jackson for Nutrisystem: This year’s line-up of famous faces who will be hawking diet plans throughout the holiday season. But as reported by theNew York Timestoday, these three weight-loss giants are also using their celebrity endorsers to spread public awareness messages about health and obesity.
Jenny in particular is giving its message a facelift this year. After the unveiling of Mariah Carey as the new spokesperson (she recently dropped 30 pounds of baby weight thanks to the program) Brand Channel reports the company is adopting a more holistic approach to weight loss. This includes a partnership with the American Heart Association to help encourage people to eat healthy and exercise, and upcoming community outreach programs at its 600 U.S. locations.
Nutrisystem and spokesperson Jackson created Nutribank, a new program designed to combat hunger. In 2012, Nutrisystem plans to make million in company food donations, and has pledged one dollar worth of food for every pound lost by Nutrisystem dieters next year. Jackson, who says healthy weight loss is a cause close to her heart, has openly spoken about her body-image issues before, including in her 2011 bookTrue You.
“You can get people’s attention when you are famous,” Jackson told theTimes, “but hunger is not something you can solve alone, which is why I wanted this partnership. This is from my heart.”
As far as Weight Watchers, the company is taking a new approach by introducing basketball great Charles Barkley as a spokesperson in an effort to encourage overweight males to slim down. Barkley has already lost 25 pounds on the program.
