DIY Style: Knitted Mittens
• Yarn: Knit Picks Palette 100% Peruvian highland wool, 50 g, 231 yd., 1 ball each of #24559 Oyster Heather, #24004 Brindle Heather, #24241 Camel Heather, #24254 Celadon Heather, #24015 Garnet Heather, #24010 Marine Heather, #24243 Asphalt Heather
• Needles: Size 2 (U.S.)/3 mm DPNs or 1 or 2 long circulars, as desired
Large-eye blunt needle
2 safety pins
• Pattern Sizes: Women's Average (Women's Large)
Note: Women's Average will fit most youth sizes. Shorten cuff and hand as needed for proper fit.
Measurements: Width: 3½ in. (4 in.); Length: 11 in. (11½ in.)
Pattern Difficulty: Intermediate
• Fair Isle Gauge: 9 sts = 1 in., 10 rnds = 1 in.
With size 2 DPNs and Celadon Heather, CO 64 (72 sts). Divide sts on 3 or 4 DPNs or 1 or 2 circular needles as desired. Without twisting sts, place marker, and join.
Ribbing:Work 6 rnds K2, P2 ribbing.
Next rnd:K32 (36), place marker, K to end of rnd.
Thumb Gusset Rnd 1:Following chart as instructed, pick up and K 1 st in the background color (if a 2-color rnd), place marker, finish rnd in established manner following chart.
Thumb Gusset Rnd 2:Following chart as instructed, K1 in the alternate color (if a 2-color rnd), move marker, finish rnd in established manner following chart.
Thumb Gusset Rnd 3:Alternating colors throughout the gusset on 2-color rnds (until you get to the border above the Pheasant Border on Chart 3, which is worked as shown on the chart), pick up and K 1 st, work thumb gusset to marker, pick up and K 1 st, move marker, finish rnd in established manner following chart.
Thumb Gusset Rnd 4:Alternating colors throughout the gusset on 2-color rnds (except as noted), work sts to marker, move marker, finish rnd in established manner, following chart. Rep Thumb Gusset Rnds 3–4 until there are 19 (21) sts before the marker. Work 5 (7) rnds even in the established manner, following chart.
Hand Rnd 1:Place the thumb gusset sts on 2 safety pins, work rnd in established manner, following chart. (64, 72 sts)
Work hand in established manner, following chart until hand measures 3 1/4 in. (3 1/2 in.) or to the end of the little finger.
Note: Work all decs in background color on 2-color rnds.
Decrease Rnd:K2tog TBL, work in established manner until there are 2 sts before the marker, K2tog, move marker, rep around.
Rep Decrease Rnd until there are 24 (28) sts left, working last 4 rnds in a solid color.
Divide sts evenly on 2 needles, front and back, and turn mitten inside out. Work a three-needle bind-off to close the end of the mitten.
Cut yarn, and tie off. Turn mitten right side out.
Thumb:Divide the 19 (21) sts evenly on DPNs or circular needles as desired. Following established chart, pick up and K 1 st in the gap with the background color on a 2-color rnd. (20, 22 sts)
Continue working Chart 1 in established manner, and then alternate Celadon Heather and Camel Heather sts, until thumb measures 2 in. (2 1/4 in.).
Thumb Decrease Rnd 1:With Camel Heather, K2tog, rep around. (10, 11 sts rem).
Cut yarn, leaving a 10-in. tail. Thread tail in a large-eye blunt needle, and weave through remaining sts.
Tighten and tie off on the inside of the mitten. Weave all loose ends in on the inside of the mitten. Wash and block mitten.
