How was the earth discovered?

Since ancient times, people have tried to comprehend the nature of the universe. Without having the capabilities of modern science, astronomers discovered new planets, moon mountains, sunspots; studied the stars forming galaxies. Stars, planets and constellations that can be seen in the sky with the naked eye, people have always known. But what about the planet on which people themselves lived, and live now? Who discovered our planet? How was the earth discovered? Maybe people always knew about the Earth?

Unknown Universe

In the past, different nations called their location differently, meaning the different meanings of these words. For the ancient Slavs, the word "land" meant the surface of the area on which they were located, or a territory, for example, the land of Novgorod or Kiev. And other peoples "lands" designated their own territory. What was outside of these lands remained unknown for a long time. And it turns out that people still discovered the uncharted planet Earth.

To find out how a person discovered the Earth, it is necessary, first of all, to find out when it happened, and who was the first to understand that he lives on a planet similar to others revolving around the Sun.In ancient times there were various ideas about the structure of the universe. But many centuries ago, the ancient Greeks assumed that the earth is not infinite, has a certain shape and is in some kind of space. Various observations of natural phenomena confirmed that the Earth is not flat, but has the shape of a ball, rotates around its axis and around the Sun. But this was contrary to the scriptures and the doctrine of the geocentric model of the world, asserted by the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle. He believed that the Earth is a freely hanging ball in the center of a multitude of spheres nested in each other with different planets, and behind the so-called "sphere of fixed stars" there is a "prime mover" driving the entire Universe.

  • Almost fourteen centuries, this theory of the structure of the universe existed. And only in the Middle Ages, in the epoch of claims about the divine origin of the world, European scientists Nikolai Kuzansky and Leonardo da Vinci dared to say that the Earth moves like space in other planets.
  • At the same time, Arab and Asian scientists invented more advanced instruments for astronomical observations. In this era, Arab researchers have made many discoveries of new lands.Considering how the Arab seafarers discovered new lands, it is worth noting that they plied the waters of the Indian Ocean, traveling to India and China, and founded new colonies on the coast of Africa.
  • In the north of the planet, the Normans discovered the islands of Iceland and Greenland, as well as the shores of North America. To the shores of the Arctic Ocean went Novgorod. New lands were discovered not only by scientists, but also traders.
  • It is worth mentioning how people who did not belong to science discovered new lands. In order to expand trade relations, the need arose to study new trade routes. For example, the Italian merchant Marco Polo discovered for Europeans unknown China and India. Tver merchant Afanasy Nikitin outfitted the ships through Persia, and the Arabian Sea reached the shores of India and compiled accurate descriptions of the countries he saw.
  • In the middle of the fifteenth century, the Spanish ships led by Columbus made the greatest discovery for mankind on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. And in 1521, Magellan makes a trip around the world.

Thanks to these and many other navigators, and pioneers, science and technology developed, new territories were opened, knowledge about the planet as a whole was replenished.

Earth discovery

Finally, the greatest discovery of the planet Earth, was made by astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus in the XVI century, when in his scientific work On the rotation of the celestial spheres he described the theory of the heliocentric system of the world. Copernicus put everything in its place. Day is replaced by night due to the rotation of the Earth around its axis, the seasons change the movement of the planet around the Sun. It took several centuries after these discoveries, before April 12, 1961, the first man saw our planet from space, making a flight on a spacecraft around the Earth, opening it to everyone again. Today, humanity has powerful thinking and technological tools with which you can gather a huge amount of information about the Earth and the entire Universe. Therefore, the question of how the Earth was discovered remains open. There is still a lot of complex scientific research and discoveries, and interesting stories.
