How to play chess?

The main goal of the game of chess is to “eat” the opponent's king without losing his own. The round is held on a board, lined up on 64 bicoloured cells - light and dark, its size - 8 cells wide, and the same - in length. The tournament itself is divided into three successive stages: the beginning - the opening, the middle - the middle game, and the final part - the end game.

Chessmen

Anyone who wants to learn how to play chess must first become familiar with the pieces on the board. In general, 32 figures take part in the fight - 16 “black” and 16 “white”. The opposing sides are staffed in the same way: each of them has eight pawns, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, a queen and a king. Interestingly, pawns, in the opinion of some experts and chess players, cannot be considered as figures at all. Chief in the entire chess set - the king, it is usually specifically made above the rest. He is able to move only one field in any direction. The king must be defended, since the threat of his inevitable knocking out by an opponent figure - mate - means losing.Although he plays a special role, but by its strength can be attributed to light figures.

A queen, like a king, moves in an arbitrary direction, but the number of fields for him is unlimited. He is the strongest piece among the rest, his value is 9 pawns, he belongs to the so-called heavy pieces. A queen differs from a king in that it is crowned with a small ball, and not with a crown or a cross. To learn to play chess well, you need to understand the importance of the rook. This figure moves exclusively in vertical and horizontal fields. It also belongs to the “heavy” class, its value is 5 pawns. If necessary, can take part in the castling, which will be discussed below. It looks like a small stylized fortress.

An elephant can be moved only along the diagonals of the same color: each player has one elephant for light cells, and one for the dark ones. It is valued as 3 pawns, refers to light pieces. The elephant is below the queen and the king, it has a drop-shaped or pointed top. A horse is a “jumping” figure: he walks along a broken contour in the shape of the letter G, and at the same time “jumps” all the figures that are on the line of his movement. In order to make them move, you must first move it to two cells in a horizontal or vertical direction, and then to one field perpendicular to the baseline. It is equal to 3 pawns, belongs to the class of light pieces. The ability to use a knight is important in order to understand how to play chess correctly, and to win your opponents.

Finally, the “cheapest” piece is the pawn. It goes only forward and only vertically, one step corresponds to one cell. Unlike other figures, it hits not directly along the trajectory of its movement, but one field forward diagonally. It is acceptable that the first move was not one, but two spaces ahead. It can be taken by the opponent's pawn, if your pawn and with it stood on the same horizontal line after you made it move two fields forward at once. It is enough for the enemy to go diagonally to the cell located behind your pawn in order to remove it from the board. Each player before the start of the game - 8 pawns, lined up in a single horizontal line to cover the main pieces. Most often, pawns are used to create a defensive structure - a kind of “fortification”.They are the weakest of all the figures, however, when one of them reaches the opposite edge of the board, it is replaced with any other figure.

Learning to play

To a large extent, it will help you learn how to play chess videos posted online in the network. The right to go first belongs to the player with the white pieces, then go alternately. In one move, move or knock out one piece. It is permissible to consider a move completed only when a hand is taken away from a piece moved to another field or taken from a board. If a chess clock is used in the tournament, do not forget to press a button on it. Consider, you will lose in the situation of a mat or stalemate, even if you found the right solution and managed to put a piece on the required field, but did not press the timer button before the time expired.

In addition to the standard moves of the figures, there are two unusual cases: castling and taking on the aisle. The second of them is already described above, it is sometimes called the capture of “enpassan” - “at the crossing” in French. Castling is moving the rook closer to the king, and the king closer to the rook. It can be carried out only from the standard position: the rook and the king must never be moved. Those who are able to play chess well will be able to make it freely. First you need to move the king two squares to the right or left boat, and then “jump over” her through him and put her on the next cell. The castling to the left is called long, and to the right - short. It is impossible if one of the pieces has already made a move, or there is an extraneous piece between the king and the rook. Also castling is unacceptable when the king is “under check”, or the cell he intends to occupy or cross for this, under the attack of the opponent's pieces.

During the game, three situations can arise: stalemate, check and checkmate. In a stalemate position, the player is not able to make any move that complies with the rules, although the king has been given the check. "Under the Shah" is the king, located on a bat cell. This means that you need to either remove him to a safe place, or cover up with another figure, or knock out the enemy figure that has created a dangerous situation. When a horse is shading, the king cannot be covered with his own figure: anyone who knows how to play chess better will confirm this. Mat is a check to the king, from which he has no exit. The goal of the whole game is to checkmate your opponent's king.

The tournament ends with a draw or win of one of the participants. The victory is fixed when the checkmate is obviously obscene, one of the opponents gave up or has delayed the time allotted to him. There is a technical victory: the opponent did not show up for the bout, interrupted the game, did not obey the judge, etc. A draw is a stalemate, there is a shortage of pieces to continue the game, repeating one position three times and a contractual draw. Also, a draw is announced if one of the players has time to end, but his opponent does not have enough figures to make a sure victory, or when both sides made over 50 moves without achieving the necessary advantage. All the listed rules are developed and adopted by FIDE, they are valid for chess players all over the world. To learn yourself and teach someone to play chess, their knowledge is necessary. Deviation from the norms is considered a gross violation, and the judge monitors that this does not happen.

However, there are various variations on the theme of traditional chess with its own rules. So, chess was invented for three, chess with a random arrangement of pieces on the board, cylindrical, hexagonal and ring-shaped chess, a citadel, a kingches, etc.
