What is vocabulary learning?

The term "vocabulary" defines a collection of words of any language or a particular part of it. Also vocabulary is the vocabulary of a person or group of people. To date, it is impossible to accurately determine the number of existing words. This is due to the fact that any modern language "lives": some words become obsolete and go out of circulation, others appear and are actively used.

There are active and passive vocabulary. The dictionary of active vocabulary includes the most common words. They can be seen in frequency dictionaries. As for the passive set of words, almost all of them are known and understood by native speakers of this or that language, but they are used relatively rarely. Limited vocabulary includes dialect, jargon, professional words. In addition, in any language there are words and expressions that are incomprehensible even to its speakers. To refer to such vocabulary units philologists use the term "agnonym".

Continuing the conversation that studies vocabulary, it is necessary to note the following.Everyone has their own vocabulary. So, the average educated person uses about 10 thousand words. This volume is called the active vocabulary of the individual. The passive dictionary of a particular person may include approximately 20-25 thousand words. Ingenious representatives of society, as a rule, have a somewhat larger margin of passive words. So, for example, Dostoevsky used more than 43 thousand words in his texts.

Let's sum up what is studying vocabulary. Vocabulary is a collection of words, and its study is engaged in the science of lexicology. What is lexicology studying? It studies various words from the point of view of their use (active or passive stock), meanings, functions, etc. Synonyms, antonyms, paronyms, homonyms, historicisms, neologisms, professionalisms, argo and other similar groups of words are objects of studying lexicology.
