What is a globe?

If we talk about the meaning of words, what does the globe mean? Globe in Latin means "ball." The globe is a volumetric rotating spherical model of the Earth with topographic features applied on it (continents, oceans, mountains, etc.). Globes are usually made in the form of a regular ball, but more accurate are globes of ellipsoid shape, closer to the shape of the Earth.

Globes convey scales much more accurately than maps. They can do all the measurements without taking into account the errors. The only value that needs to be calculated by multiplying by the coefficient after the measurement on the globe is the distance. In addition to the usual geographical globes, there are globes of the star sphere. What is a star sphere globe? This is a model of the celestial sphere, applied to the globe in a mirror image - if you look at the sky not from the inside of the sphere, but from the outside. For a long time, globes were very important. Now, because of its bulkiness, globes are used only for educational purposes, and all calculations and mapping are made on the basis of computer maps and digital models of the globe.
