Book review

The Student Reader of Secular Latin Poetry is designed to introduce intermediate and advanced students of Latin to a wide range of secular Latin poetry from Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The Reader covers the period roughly from the 4th century to the 13th century C.E. and includes whole poems and selections in a diverse range of secular topics and themes: mythology, history, Germanic legend, beast fable, erotic and love poetry, folktale, comedy and farce, personal poetry, travel poetry, pastoral poetry, satire and instructional verse. There are 26 selections in all. The Reader provides a brief biographical account of the poets, a short discussion of the poems themselves and a select bibliography of editions and English translations. The poems are divided into smaller parts with vocabulary and grammatical notes linked to each part.

The texts selected range in grammatical difficulty and length, from the short and simple such as the versified Aesop of Alexander Nequam to the long and difficult such as Ausonius’ tribute to the Mosel river. Latin vocabulary and grammatical and contextual notes have been provided for both teachers and students alike to facilitate understanding of the text and in some cases with discussion of its more profound aspects. Emphasis in the vocabulary is made to provide an accurate Post-Classical meaning in the context provided by the poet.
Poets and works include:
Ausonius, The Mosel River
Dionysius Cato, The Moral Distichs
Claudian, An Old Man of Verona
Aldhelm of Malmesbury, The Riddles
